More Like a Jaguar

“Starve your distractions, feed your focus.” - Anonymous

This photograph I took of a jaguar at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens symbolizes the power to face your own fears. When you think of a jaguar you may think of an aggressive animal who carries a lot of power. However, you may not realize the wildcat has deeper symbolism that can also connect to starting your journey in photography. The connection between photography and the jaguar can help motivate you to “starve your distractions, feed your focus.”

Jumping into the photography world can be scary and intimidating, especially when you are just starting out. There are many people around you who have more experience and stronger skills. This can be used as your drive to focus on what you want to accomplish in your career and allow you to face your own fears. For example, the Jaguar has binocular vision which gives the ability to use each eye individually. This skill allows them to have better depth perception, vision, and foresight. We may use this skill as photographers to focus on preparing for a shoot that can frame our images in a more professional appearance.

Not only are jaguars a symbol of good vision but they are also a symbol of power, confidence, focus, courage, and strength. Jaguars also represent growth and the ability to embrace change. These are all the characteristics you need to become a photographer. There is a lot of courage to take a leap and share your photographs, but without the confidence in your work, you will never improve in your career. The focus on your goals and improvements in your photographs will lead you to success. So if you are ever doubting yourself within your photography career, remember to be more like a jaguar.
